what is tithing?

Watch Gilbert Thurston explain tithing.

A tithe—which just means “tenth”—is defined as the first 10% of a person’s income that is to be given back to the local church. Tithing is a principle that is taught throughout the entire Bible. When we tithe, it's an act of worship to God and also a demonstration to Him that we are in control of our money instead of our money controlling us.

why would I tithe?

For many, the idea of bringing the first 10% of our income to the Church seems overwhelming. The thing is, it doesn’t matter how much or how little we make, God promises to pour out blessings on us when we tithe. Tithing is about training our heart to trust God at His Word.

We know generosity is a huge step of obedience, but you’re not in this alone! We want to know you’re taking your next step in generosity by bringing your full tithe to the church with

The 90–Day Tithing Challenge.

malachi 3:10

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this...and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

What is the 90-day

tithe challenge

The Bible says we can take the promises of God to the bank. When we bring our first and best back to God, He promises to bless the rest. We can’t outgive God.

We commit to you that if you tithe for three months and God doesn’t hold true to His promises of blessings, we will refund 100% of your tithe. No questions asked. To request the 90-day Tithe Challenge form, click here.

Testing His Generosity - Simon and Melanie Song's Story

Growing up, neither Simon or I was taught about tithing.  All I knew about giving to the church was that my mom would give me a dollar to drop in the offering plate.  It wasn't until I was in my 20's that I really understood what it meant to tithe.  Simon and I have always been very conscious of our spending.  We don't make frivolous purchases.  Ever since we were married, we have been able to save several hundred dollars each month.

We thought we were financially prepared and doing the best we could.  During one of Gilbert's sermons on money, he discussed tithing.  Simon and I were called to begin doing so.  Gilbert talked about "God's math" (90% of your income with God's blessing is greater than keeping 100% for yourself) and, although we thought we were doing our best, we were led to tithe.

We really didn't think our financial situation would change, or even that it needed to.  However, within a few weeks of beginning to tithe, God presented us with an amazing opportunity.  We were able to drop our mortgage interest rate from 6.3% to 3.!%.  Altogether we will end up saving over $100,000 by the time we pay off our house!

We didn't see how God could bless us financially until we let Him have what was already His.  Once we trusted Him, He blessed us even more.
